Rye: Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye Blended, Canadian Whisky

90 Points – $33

The color of new oak. Nose if oak and clove. Spicy clove, anise, pepper and apricot fruit mouth. Oily and spicy. Best served neat. (Not a mixer). Given 97.5 points by whisky expert Jim Murray in his 13th Annual Whiskey Bible.

Much better than regular Crown Royal which suffers from a harshness from its corn mash origin. This is more like the more expensive XO Crown Royal.

White Wine: Cliff Lede Sauvignon Blanc, 2009, California

90 Points – $35

A Canadian entrepreneur who now has vineyards in California including areas in the famous Stag’s Leap district. This crisp white wine will go up against any of the New Zealand sauvignons with a nose of green apple, starfruit and citrus fruits. Flavors of tart apple, grapefruit and earth. A good finish.  A good Californian Sauvignon Blanc.

Red Wine: Melba Lucia Yarra Valley, 2007, Australia.

87 Points – $30

Named after the Yarra Valley diva Dame Nellie Melba, whose performances in the opera Lucia Di Lammermoor made her famous in the 1860’s when cuttings for these wines were first planted. Oak and caramel fill the nose and a full palate of fruit, molasses and caramel. Medium bodied with a disappointing finish for the age of the vines it comes from. Must try other years.

A full mouthful of dark spices, pepper, plum and oak finish in a long smooth fashion. An ageable wine from the small lots program. Very good stuff here.
